KAR-IN: Test infrastructure for rail-centric future forms of mobility. The Carnic Region Innovation Laboratory (“KAR-IN”) offers its railway infrastructure for the development and testing of rail-centric mobility offers and sees itself as a supporter in the field of new environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility embedded in the areas of environmental protection, climate and energy transition.
The aim is to enable new and innovative forms of rail-centric mobility and to be able to test them in a real environment. KAR-IN contributes its part to the digital transformation and mobility turnaround by providing developers and researchers with a de facto entire valley as a test field.
KAR-IN, with a railway line of almost 30 km, several railway crossings, railway stations and stops as well as parking, loading and shunting areas, provides a comprehensive test field for new forms of mobility in this valley.
The overhead line-free railway line positively stimulates developments in the field of drive systems using battery or alternative energy (hydrogen, e-fuels, etc.).
In addition, there are also options for the rail/road interface, test fields for autonomous driving and “smart vehicles/robots”. In particular, the topics of regional mobility as well as climate and environmental topics can be processed in KAR-IN. The flat ownership and operational hierarchy ensures flexible, fast, cost-effective and, of course, barrier-free access.
